Have I Mentioned It's Hot?

Can I say I'd rather be sweaty than freezing my toes off?   Today was another day of Heat Advisories and humidty indexes in the 70th percentile and I managed to only poke my nose out a couple of times to give my container plantings a much needed watering or two.  In this heat and the resulting rampant foliage growth, it doesn't take too long before the plants are on gasping for moisture and their leaves curling in protest.  I've modified my watering schedule to meet their demands and have added some more flakes of straw around the zukes and maters to help hold in some moisture.  I've really tried to keep the tomatoes  evenly watered and so far I am not seeing any cat facing or cracking on the fruit, and only one of the Romas may have Blossom End Rot.  Maybe the Tums I put in the hole when I transplanted them helped allay that scourge.   The fruit set has been really quite nice, in spite of the early heat and a few of the larger Better Boys are beginning to show a hint of blush. The vines themselves are now pushing seven feet up the poles in the garden.   I haven't seen any more signs of blight, so I guess the one plant I removed early in the season didn't spread.  I guess I got lucky.

Between mosquito bites I managed to snip a few pieces of Hot and Spicy Oregano and some Genovese Basil for some toasted French Bread bites.  I grabbed a few peperoncini peppers and used up some Bellas I had in the frig.

Slather the toasted bread with some sauce, provolone and parmesan with a little Italian Sausage.  Add your snipped herbs and chopped veggies and then broil for supper!
